By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 26: A young man was killed and a policeman was injured in, what police claimed, an encounter in Nazimabad on Thursday.

Police said two young men were roaming on a motorcycle in front of the New Urdu Bazaar near Sir Syed Girls College. Two policemen stopped the motorcyclists.

While the policemen were physically searching one of the suspects, he opened fire on them injuring ASI Nisar, aged 52. The other policeman, Ahmed Riaz, returned the fire injuring one of the young men.

The other suspect, who kept sitting on the motorcycle, escaped.

Both the injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced the young man dead on arrival. The dead man was identified as Javed Malik from a identity card found in his pocket.

The injured policeman was admitted to the hospital.

A man shot his younger brother to death in Al-Falah, Malir, on Wednesday morning.

Police said elder brother Basharat Husain, aged 40, wanted to dispose of the family house in Punjab Town, Al-Falah. On Wednesday morning he had an argument with his mother over the property issue. During the argument, Basharat misbehaved with his mother whereupon Sakhawat Husain intervened. A scuffle took place between the two brothers during which Basharat opened fire on Sakhawat and fled the scene.

Sakhawat died on the spot.

The body was sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for post- mortem.

CARJACKING: Forty-one vehicles — 13 cars and 28 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city in the past 48 hours, police said.

Five cars were hijacked. Eight others were stolen.

Twelve motorcycles were hijacked. Sixteen others were stolen.

DIES: A prisoner died in Malir District Jail on Thursday.

Police said prisoner Farooq, aged 26, was booked in a drug case from Korangi. He was suffering from tuberculosis and was a drug addict, the jail police said. On Thursday he was found dead in his cell, jail authorities said.

The body was sent to the JPMC for autopsy. Sources at the hospital said Farooq’s autopsy report had been reserved till the receipt of the histopathological report.
