Local bodies elections in Fata soon, says Iftikhar

                                                                     By Our Correspondent

HANGU, Dec 24: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has declared that arrangements have been completed for holding the local governments elections in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), saying that the announcement to the effect would be made soon.

Speaking at a meeting of tribal jirga in Kalaya, the headquarters  of the Orakzai Agency, on Monday, the governor said that through the local government system the tribal people would be empowered to decide  on their development.

Besides, he said, by bringing reforms in the financial and political affairs of the tribal agencies, the people would also get rid of the out-dated system.

He said that while taking any decision in this regard, the government would also uphold the interests of the tribal people and no decision contradictory to the tribal traditions and values would be taken. The government, he observed, had no intention to introduce the police and the judicial system in the tribal areas.

However, he added, that the necessary amendments would be made to ensure justice-based tribal system.

DEVELOPMENT: The governor told the jirga that provision of maximum resources would be ensured during the next few years to bring the tribal areas at par with the developed areas of the country. In this connection, he mentioned a special development  package worth one billion rupees, which had been provided by President   Pervez Musharraf for the uplift of the inaccessible areas of Fata.

He said the package would remove the backwardness of the Orakzai Agency and would ensure rapid development of  education and healthcare facilities, communication, water supply and mineral development.

LITERACY: Expressing concern over the terribly low rate of literacy in the agency, the governor said that education would be given top priority to get rid of this problem. He also announced the establishment of a public school in Kalaya.

He also announced that special relaxation in the recruitment policy would also be provided to ensure the recruitment of the local candidates against the vacancies of teachers.
