LHC refuses to process PML-N petition

Published December 23, 2002

LAHORE, Dec 22: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has refused to entertain a petition filed by the PML-N against transfers and postings in the Punjab — specially in Lahore — ahead of the by-election on Jan 15.

The petitioner, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, said he had earlier lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against the transfers that were aimed at manoeuvring the results of by-election. He added that he had informed the authorities that under Article 218, they could adopt all the measures needed for ensuring fair and transparent polls.

However, when no action was taken by the EC, Mr Rafiq filed the petition with the LHC on Dec 20 (Friday).

The LHC registrar office returned the petition with the objection that copies of transfer orders had not been attached to it.

The petition was again submitted with the plea that it should be put before the chief justice along with the objection as allowed by the rules.

However, the office repeated its objection, the council for Mr Rafiq said, alleging that when he sent his clerk to the office to clear his point of view, the officials there said they had been directed not to process the case.
