HYDERABAD, Dec 20: The Taluka Nazim, Latifabad, Abdul Jabbar Khan, on Friday said that the Taluka Council of Latifabad was going to levy commercial fees on commercial institutions from Jan 2003 and solicited the cooperation of the general public in this context.

Addressing a press conference at the press club on Friday, he said that his administration had tried its level best to serve the people and ensure provision of civic amenities with the active support of the district Nazim, Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman and Naib Nazim Nawab Rashid Ali Khan.

He has appealed to President Pervez Musharraf to devolve the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA) right upto the Taluka level so that the drainage problem of Latifabad Taluka could be solved.

He claimed that the roads were constructed under the Khushhal Pakistan Programme and from the available resources of the Taluka Council Latifabad, adding that no new tax had been levied since the introduction of the devolution plan last year.

He said that efforts had been made to improve the recovery of already imposed taxes.

He said that the main problem of non-payment of salaries to Taluka Council workers had been resolved to some extent.

He, however, said that from the new year his council would impose commercial fees on the commercial organizations, for which the cooperation of the general public was much needed.

The Taluka Nazim said that the people living in his jurisdiction had to face sewage problem, which concerned the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA), and added that the devolution of this department was still pending.

He said that if the HDA was devolved upto the Talukalevel, then the sewage and drainage problem would also be solved.

He assured the electorates that he would continue to serve the people and introduce such schemes in which the people were not subjected to new taxes.

He said that commercial schemes would be introduced in Latifabad for achieving short- and long-term benefits.

SHC: Justice Mohammad Moosa K. Leghari of the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, on Friday directed a newly-wedded couple to sort out their matter otherwise they would be sent to jail.

Ms Hina Naz had filed a constitutional petition in the court, citing Abdul Rasheed, Shahida Begum, her mother, SHO police station Makki Shah, and the district police officer, Hyderabad, as respondents.

She claimed that she had married Irshad Ahmed on Dec 12 of her own free will before a judicial magistrate.

She told the court when she went to her parent’s house her parents and grandfather beat her up, forcing her to leave the house.

She said that she and her husband were being harassed and threatened by the police on the insistence of her parents who were quite influential.

She said that when she realised that both her husband’s and her life was in great danger she moved the high court, seeking directives for the police not to harass either of them.

She said that she was an adult lady and the respondents had no right to harass her on any ground whatsoever.

She prayed the court to direct the police not to harass either of them.

The court had summoned the SHO, Makki Shah police station, Amir Jafri, who attended the court.

In his statement, he told the court that he had received an application from a woman, Shahida, the widow of Akram, against Irshad, Naeem, Irfan, and Nausheen through the DPO, Hyderabad.

He told the court that according to that application, the petitioner had taken away gold bangles, a gold locket and chain, a ring, and defence saving certificates of Rs5,000.
