Windies clinch series despite Kapali’s heroics
CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh), Dec 18: Alok Kapali’s pugnacious knock of 85 went in vain as the West Indies wrapped up the second and final Test against Bangladesh inside three days here on Wednesday.
The seven-wicket verdict at the M.A. Aziz Stadium followed a massive innings and 310-run victory for the West Indies in the first Test in Dhaka last week.
Bangladesh, after conceding a 102-run first innings lead, were bowled out for 212, setting the visiting team an easy target of 111. The home team lost their last four wickets for just two runs.
The West Indies thus blanked the home side in both versions of the game, having won a three-match one-day series 2-0 after a truncated opening tie in Chittagong.
It was Bangladesh’s 16th loss in 17 matches since gaining Test status two years ago, 11 of them by innings.
The only consolation for Bangladesh was Kapali’s effort, his best in five Tests, which earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.
Kapali, 18, struck 12 boundaries and two sixes in his 111-ball knock and was part of a useful 73-run partnership with Enamul Hoque for the seventh wicket.
But Kapali’s dismissal at the stroke of tea ensured an early end to their innings.
The West Indian pacemen once again proved tough to handle for Bangladesh, with Darren Powell and left-armer Pedro Collins bagging three wickets each.
Fellow fast bowlers Jermaine Lawson, named Man-of-the-Series, and Vasbert Drakes took two wickets each and gave no respite to the home batsmen.
The target was achieved with ease as left-handed opener Chris Gayle played a brisk knock of 37 in which he hit nine boundaries.
West Indian stand-in captain Ridley Jacobs said there were some moments when his side was under pressure, but overall it was an easy outing for them.
“They put up a better performance, but we knew we only had to stick on. It’s good to go back for Christmas on a winning note,” Jacobs said.
Losing skipper Khaled Mashud praised the West Indies for their all-round performance, but said his team had performed better in the second Test.
“I am proud of three bowlers — Tapash Baisya, Talha Jubair and Manjurul Islam — and we will improve by next year’s World Cup.”
