MIRPURKHAS: Increase demanded in sugarcane rate

By Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS, Dec 16: Some 500 growers and landlords belonging to Mirpurkhas and Umerkot on Monday threatened not to supply sugarcane to mills if the rates were not raised to Rs60 per 40kg.

They also urged the government to take action against the mills, which they said were blackmailing the growers.

This was resolved in a meeting of the Abadgars and sugarcane growers, which was held here at Rafique Kachhelo village under the chairmanship of Faisal Kachhelo.

The meeting later constituted a 16-member committee to solve the problems of growers.

Members of the committee, include Faisal Kachhelo, Ahmed Khan Bhurgari and Chaudhry Shafi Sansi.

The meeting adopted several resolutions unanimously, including those calling for fixing the purchase rate of sugarcane at Rs60 per 40kg, payment of outstanding dues to growers and beginning of the crushing season all over Sindh.

Our Hyderabad Bureau adds: The Sindh cane commissioner has announced that the sugarcane growers may file the claims of dues of payment of their sugarcane crops, lying with sugar mills.

The applications in this respect should be sent to the office of the cane commissioner, Sindh, Sessions Court building, Hyderabad, with documentary proofs so that legal action may be taken against the defaulting sugar mill.
