PORT ELIZABETH (South Africa), Dec 11: Unpredictable Pakistan turned the form-book inside out when they crushed South Africa by a massive margin of 182 runs to win the second one-dayer and level the five-match series 1-1 at St. George’s Park on Wednesday.
It was an incredible performance by Pakistan after the first one-day debacle which it lost by 132 runs last Sunday at Durban.
Set the daunting task of 336 runs for victory South Africa collapsed dramatically to be bowled out for 153 off 29 overs although the home side started well with the opening stand putting on 57.
Skipper Waqar Younis began the South African slide removing first three batsmen and later Mohammad Sami and Shahid Afridi chipped in three wickets each to give their side morale-boosting victory.
Earlier, Salim Elahi and Abdul Razzaq hit centuries as Pakistan thrashed a record 335 for six.
Elahi (135) and Razzaq (112) put on 257 off 40 overs for the second wicket. It was the highest partnership for any wicket by any country against South Africa.
The Pakistan total beat the 330 for seven scored by Australia at the same ground last season, the previous highest by all-comers against South Africa.
South Africa scored 326 for three against Australia before the Australians went four runs better in reply last season.
