KARACHI: Human Rights Day events

KARACHI, Dec 9: Like in different countries of the world, a number of organizations in Pakistan have scheduled programmes to observe International Human Rights Day on Dec 10.

In Karachi, the Sindh National Council is organizing a conference to be held at 4pm at the local press club. Writers, intellectuals, lawyers, social and political activists and elite will participate in the discussion on human rights.

The participants will express their views on the misuse of Constitution and judiciary with regard to the democratic process in the country.

A former chief justice of Pakistan, Justice (r) Sajjad Ali Shah, chief of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Afrasiyab Khattak as well as Mahtab Akber Rashdi and Anis Haroon are among those invited to speak on the occasion.

A seminar on No cause is worthier than the cause of human rights is being organized jointly by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and the Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid (LHRLA) at Muslim Gymkhana, near Shaheen Complex, at 3.30pm.

A function is to be held at the Rafia Chaudhry Memorial Auditorium, Sidco Centre, at 3.30 pm to launch the “Helpline for Workers’ Rights.” Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed, a judge of the Sindh High Court, will preside over a meeting during the function whereas Zahida Hina, Nabi Ahmad, Ahsanullah Khan, Qamar-ul-Hassan and others are among those who will address it. The programme has been organized jointly by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) and the Movement for Labour Rights (MLR).

The Aurat Foundation has scheduled a series of programmes in the district headquarters — Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroz, Thatta, Nawabshah, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Umerkot, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Khairpur Mirs, Ghotki, Gwadar, etc — to highlight the issues related to human rights and create awareness on the subject among the masses.
