ISLAMABAD, Dec. 8: The Customs mobile squad deputed at Tarnol customs check post foiled an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of imported cloth, which was being brought from Peshawar in a passenger bus number PRK-5140 on Eid day (December 6).

The customs sources said the Superintendent Customs (Preventive) Chaudhry Hassan of Rawalpindi organised a team on a tip off from the intelligence sources about smuggling of a huge quantity of cloth from Peshawar.

A special raiding party was organised, which set up a picket at Tarnol, a few hundred yards short of the Tarnol railway crossing. When the bus carrying the cloth was sgnalled to stop, the driver tried to speed away.

However, after a brief chase the bus was stopped close to the Tarnol railway crossing. The bus was searched that led to the recovery of 8,150 yards of imported cloth concelaed in compartments and special cavities. It was learnt that the cloth was being smuggled to Lahore.

The Customs authorities valued the cloth at around Rs1 million. The bus and the cloth were impounded.

However, interestingly the Customs authorities were unable to disclose the name of the person or persons who could be involved in smuggling of cloth. Apparently no name was mentioned in the case registered with the Customs.
