ISLAMABAD, Dec 8: The arrangements for establishing local government system in the federal capital have been halted due to some anomalies in the LG Ordinance promulgated recently by President Gen Pervez Musharraf, a source told Dawn.

The source said Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration had sent a letter to the President and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the removal of the anomalies.

A senior official of the ICT also confirmed that there were some anomalies in the LG Ordinance as result of which the process of delimitation of union councils and other necessary work could not be done.

He said the competent authorities had been asked to remove the anomalies.

A source from National Reconstruction Bureau said the responsibility of establishing LG system in Islamabad had been devolved on the shoulders of the new government. He said the LG election in the capital would be held after Eidul Fitr.

Meanwhile, the additional deputy commissioner (general), Tariq Malik, said the ICT administration had prepared rules for the LG system in the capital and sent them to the law ministry for vetting.

Talking to Dawn, Member of the National Assembly, Main Muhammad Aslam, said a word ‘Ward’ had been written in place of union council in the ordinance, which is to be ratified.

He said ward was a smaller unit than union council and if the anomaly was not removed the ICT administration would have to established some 800 wards instead of proposed 40 union councils.
