BD jails European journalists

By Nurul Kabir

DHAKA, Dec 2: The two arrested European freelance journalist were on Monday sent to the Dhaka Central Jail after five days of grilling over their alleged “anti-state activities”.

The journalists — Briton Zaiba Malik of Pakistani origin and Italian Bruno Sorrentino — on assignment for Britain’s Channel 4 were arrested on Nov 25 over charges of “clandestine activities”.

Meanwhile, the high court had also instructed the government to ensure that they get adequate legal support to defend themselves against the accusation. The HC issued the instruction following separate writ petitions filed against the government on Sunday.

The accused were produced before a magistrate’s court in Dhaka in the morning, which sent them to the jail, refusing a police request for more time to interrogate the foreign journalists.
