KARACHI: MMA sets 27 terms to join Sindh coalition

KARACHI, Dec 1: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has put 27 conditions for joining a coalition government in Sindh.
The conditions, which pertain to law-making in accordance with the recommendations of the Islamic Ideology Council, were released to the press by Maulana Asadullah Bhutto, the Sindh chief of the MMA, at an Iftar-dinner here on Sunday.
The MMA is becoming more rigid on these conditions after the formation of its government in the NWFP and coalition arrangement in Balochistan amid negotiations with the PML-Q led government at the centre.
In Sindh the MMA has held separate talks with the People’s Party Parliamentarians and the GNA with a view to forming government in the province.
According to the MMA leader, the constellation will support the party which agrees to law-making in the province in accordance with the Islamic Ideology Council’s recommendations.
The MMA insists that the future government will not frame any law contrary to Islamic principles. It is also demanding a commitment from the prospective coalition partner to declare that strict action would be taken to banish the narcotics menace and dens involved in illegal activities.
It is also the MMA’s demand that for social/civic and family matters and small causes a system of dispensation of justice based on mosque level be introduced on the pattern of Qazi courts, so that the common man is provided justice at his doorstep.
The MMA would support the party which would declare to remove restrictions on the registration of religious schools, and a registration system for NGOs would be allowed.
One of the conditions is that a system would be evolved for the registration of FIR to enable the common man to have access to justice. It also wants a firm commitment to work for eliminating the Kalashnikov culture, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, murders, ethnicity, etc.
The MMA agenda also insists that distribution of water to Sindh by IRSA would be done according to rules, and the rights of the province should be protected. Provincial autonomy will be made certain by reducing the centre’s intervention. It also want assurance that steps would be taken to secure royalty for gas and other natural resources tapped in the province.
It is also the MMA’s demand that the restrictions on food being served in wedding parties be retained as per the Supreme Court’s judgment.
It also favours collection of tax for housing and agriculture through bank, computerization of revenue and city survey cards, ownership to goth dwellers in six months. It also wants 10th Ramazan to be declared a national day.
The MMA is opposed to co-education at all levels, and wants the future coalition partner to give a firm commitment for putting in place a separate educational system for women. It has also demanded that, like sportsmen, Hafiz-i-Quran also be given 20 extra marks. It has also demanded that those Quranic verses, their translation and explanation, which pertain to Jihad, and which were removed from syllabus be restored.
Its agenda also includes creation of separate women university, technical education at Karachi, Sindh, Shah Lateef and other universities of the province besides special arrangements for ensuring women and the scheduled castes easy access to education.
