PESHAWAR, Nov 26: A group of Pakistani prisoners who were set free from Kabul prison arrived at Landi Kotal, Khyber Agency, via Torkham gate on Tuesday evening, sources said.

Officials confirmed that 87 prisoners crossed the Torkham border around 6.30pm. Majority of the prisoners reportedly belong to the upper parts of the NWFP and Punjab province.

Soon after their arrival at the border town the political authorities of Khyber Agency took them into custody and shifted to a lock up in Landi Kotal, some 45 kms west of Peshawar.

Officials said that the prisoners who were set free by the Afghan authorities would be questioned for their illegal entry in the neighbouring country.

About 15 prisoners who were released by the Afghan government on Nov 16 last are already languishing in the tiny lock up in Landi Kotal as one of the detainees has escaped from the detention centre.

A large number of Pakistani volunteers, headed by Maulana Sofi Mohammad, the chief of a disbanded organization crossed into Afghanistan last year to fight along with the Taliban fighters against the US-led forces.
