PPP denies deal with govt

ISLAMABAD, Nov 25: Pakistan People’s Party on Monday denied rumours of deal with the regime and asked party workers to remain united and not be misled by disinformation.

In a statement, acting secretary-general of the party, Raza Rabbani, denied that there was any understanding or deal with the regime or its collaborators, Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam), that had given rise to the creation of a forward bloc in the PPP.

“It is equally incorrect that the forward bloc has the blessing or its members are in contact with PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto. This disinformation is being spread by vested interests and is strongly condemned.

“The forward bloc is a creation of horse-trading by the regime propelled by the desire to perpetuate itself in power. It is continuation of its policy to break and isolate the mainstream liberal, progressive political party. The PPP pays this price because it represents the third alternative to dictatorship in the form of the PML-Q and the religious parties.

“The party is committed to its democratic and progressive principles and that is why it did not enter into any deal with the regime to gain relief for its leadership at the cost of compromising its workers’ sacrifices, the struggle of the party and its commitment to civil society.

“The PPP is the only liberal, democratic national institution and attempts to break it are attempts to break the national consensus in civil society. This must be resisted by all.

“Benazir Bhutto is the chairperson of the PPP and the path for her return is through the collective struggle of the working classes. The party has crushed with the strength of the workers past attempts to divide it and shall do so again,” he said.
