No headway in probe against ex-FDE director

By Khawar Ghumman

ISLAMABAD, Nov 17: An inquiry initiated against a former director of Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), allegedly involved in an ACR-tampering case, is being delayed for the last five months, sources said.

They said the former director of model colleges, Prof Wajid Nawaz, was facing charges of tampering with an ACR of an FDE official. However, no progress has been made on the issue so far.

The sources said, although, Mr Nawaz had been transferred to Islamabad College for Boys, G-6/3, on May 31, he was still performing duties at the head office. He has also been asked by the FDE director-general, Brig Maqsoodul Hassan (retired), to deal with the legal issues.

Ms Samina, who has replaced Mr Nawaz as director model colleges, talking to this reporter, confirmed that the former director was still performing duties.

When asked as to how the former director was working at the FDE when an inquiry was going on against him, she said: “I do not know under what arrangements he comes to the office.”

The sources said despite the fact that Mr Nawaz was facing an inquiry himself, he was made member of an inquiry committee constituted by the directorate recently to investigate a clash between two student groups at Islamabad Model College For Boys, F-7/3.

Prof Rafique Tahir, chief coordinator training and official spokesperson for the FDE, when contacted, said: “Mr Nawaz is a full-fledge professor and the directorate can engage him as per requirements.”

In addition to this, during his stint as director model colleges, he and Rukhsana Tufail, principal of Islamabad College for Girls F-7/4, were nominated for National Institute for Public Administration (NIPA) training by the directorate, in violation of standing official “Rules of Business” in this regard.

Reacting to the violation of rules, the education ministry, in a letter, dated September 14, 2001, came hard on the FDE and directed it to follow the rules of business and secretariat instructions, and prescribed channel in dealing with such nominations.

When contacted, Wajid Nawaz said: “Although, an inquiry is going on against me, I have not been suspended by the FDE, rather transferred to ICB G-6/3 and when ever directorate calls me for some assignment I am supposed to offer my services.”

When asked to comment on the charges levelled against him, he refused to comment.
