Shahzad and Nida to defend titles


LAHORE, Nov 7: The All-Pakistan Haleeb Cup junior ranking tournament will be played here from December 9-15 at Punjab Lawn Tennis Bagh-i-Jinnah courts.

The week long event, a premier junior activity, will attract players from all over the country, said Bashir A Gill, secretary, PLTA Thursday.

“Points earned from this event will be counted to the national ranking,” he said.

Gill said events to be contested include, boys singles under-12,14,18 besides under-18 doubles.Girls will be competing in under-14,18.

“In all 150 boys and girls players are likely to take part,” he maintained.

PLTA official said Shahzad Khan will defend under-18 title while in the girls Nida Rahim is the defending champion. Shahzad and Ashiq Munir are the reigning champions of the under-18 doubles.

It will be the fifth national level tournament which PLTA will be organising, he said and added previously it has organised Punjab Governors Cup,All Pakistan Rahim Yar Khan Cup, Independence day junior tournament, National Grass Court championship.

“PLTA is exploring all means to hold tournaments at all levels in the province and it is organising major national events to play an active in the overall promotion of tennis,” he said.—APP
