KARACHI: No respite from water shortage

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 6: There has been no let up in the persisting acute water shortage in many of the areas in the city and thousands of people faced disappointment for pinning their hopes on the promises by the KWSB for an improvement with the advent of Ramazan.

The worst affected localities include Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 4, 4-A, 8, Clifton’s blocks 2, 4, 5 and 7, parts of Lyari, Orangi, Baldia, North Karachi, Surjani and Shershah.

The other localities where the supply remained suspended on Wednesday as part of the KWSB’s plan of diverting Indus water to the sprawling townships hooked to Hub Dam source include Old City Area, Garden East and West, Soldier Bazaar, Saddar, Shikarpur Colony, Cosmopolitan Society and parts of Lyari.

Residents of hard-hit areas complained that although there was no water holiday for their localities on Wednesday, they either received no water or scant supply. As such, they added, they had no choice but to buy private tanker water at an exorbitant rate.

Refuting the KWSB’s claim that it was suspending the supply of every locality only once in week for diverting Indus water to the certain townships, residents of different affected areas complained that their localities used to go dry for three consecutive days whenever a water holiday was enforced in their localities.

The localities where water supply would remain suspended on Thursday include Landhi, Korangi, Defence Housing Authority, National Refinery, Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan Railways, PAF (Korangi) Base and its adjoining areas.
