Top seeds advance to second round

LAHORE, Oct 29: All seeded players entered the second round of the Global Telecom Cup National Grass Court tennis championship, at the Punjab Coaching Centre courts Tuesday.

Top seed and a key player of Pakistan Davis Cup team Aqeel Khan seemed to be in a hurry as he disposed of unseeded Kazim Ali without dropping any points (6-0, 6-0) in 25 minutes only.

Second seed Asim Shafik got a walkover against Murad Akram to move into the next round.

Third seed Nomi Qamar also earned a facile 2-0 win against Suleman Bashir 6-0, 6-2.

Former Davis Cupper and now the non-playing captain of the Pakistan team Rashid Malik, fourth seed, brushed aside Hameed Gul in a easy encounter 6-0, 6-0.

Muhammad Shafique, the sixth seed toppled Arif Feroze after facing good fight in both the sets 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

In a well-contested match, unseeded Haris Aziz stretched to full distance to beat Janisar Ahmad 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Haris won the first set when he broke Janisar’s service in the second game. Janisar tried to recover when he staged a comeback and broke Haris’s service twice in the third and the fifth games. However, Haris bounced back and won the third set 6-4.

Eight seed Inam Gul faced little opposition before beating Omer Butt 6-4, 6-4.

In other matches, Mehmood Khan proved too good against Bilal Salahuddin 6-0, 6-0. Amjad Nasir treated Ziaul Haq harshly 6-0, 6-0. Aurangzeb Khan excelled against Aftab Anwar 6-1, 6-2. Munir Ashiq hammered Wakeel Khan 6-2, 6-1.

Boys singles U-18 and U-14 events also started.

In the U-18 sections only two matches were held while In U-14 seven ties were decided.

Ladies singles and men’s doubles events begins Wednesday.
