Rubab, Kiran excel in age group championship
LAHORE, Oct 27: Punjab with 222 points won the keenly contested fifth National Women Junior Age group swimming championship at the Fatima Jinnah Medical College pool Sunday.
Punjab got 11 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals to accumulate 222 points.
Sindh posed a strong challenge to Punjab on both days and secured second position with 210 points. Sindh earned nine gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.
Wapda, despite a fine performance from prominent swimmer Kiran Khan, who shattered five records in the U-14 Age group competition, came in third position with 82 points. Wapda claimed seven gold and one silver and bronze medal each.
Army with three gold medals scored 21 points and finished fourth.
Meanwhile, three more national records were improved on the final day. Kiran, added two more to her credit on the final day after breaking three records a day earlier. She bettered the record in the 50 metres freestyle when she clocked 31.16 seconds.The previous record of 33.27 was held by Alizeh Gangji (Sindh) in Nov 1999. Kiran’s fifth record break was in 100 metres breaststroke clocking one minute 31.71 seconds shattering the record of Aimen Waqar (Sindh) achieved in 2001.
Captain of the Punjab team Rubab Raza also created a new record in 100 metres breaststroke U-12 Age Group. A student of 7th class in the Convent of Jesus and Mary School, Rubab clocked one minute 31.71 seconds. The Punjab champion for the last three consecutive years, Rubab bettered the timing of Kiran of one minute 33.3 seconds which she achieved in the third Islamic Games in Iran in Oct 2001. In all, Rubab won four gold and two silver medals for her team.
Ayza Tareen (Sindh), Rubab (Punjab), Kiran (Wapda) and Zara Zafar (Punjab) were declared best swimmers of the U-10, U-12, U- 14 and U-16 Age group competitions, respectively.

100m breaststroke (U-12): Rubab Raza (Punjab) one minute 31.71 sec (NR), Khulood Bawa (Sindh), Saneen Shishmahal (Sindh).
200m individual medley (U-14): Kiran Khan (Wapda) two minute 45.16 sec (NR), Mahwish Naveed Aziz (Sindh), Ayesha Akram (Punjab).
100m breaststroke (U-16); Hira Nur (Wapda) one minute 37.69 sec, Nasha Kharas (Sindh), Hira Waseem (Punjab).
4x50m freestyle relay (U-10): Sindh, three minute 4.39 sec (Ayesha Fareen, Daniya Sardar, Aelia Mehdi, Austrin Yazdani), Punjab (Azalfa Shafi, Imrat, Kashifa, Tahmina Nasir).
4x100m freestyle relay (U-12): Punjab, five minute 38.66 sec (Anum Shahid, Afia Shah, Eesha Khan, Rubab Raza), Sindh (Khulood Bawa, Saneen Shishmahal, Shanza Jamil, Ayesha Dawood).
