Raqeeb-i-Azam lifts Colts & Fillies Trial Cup

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 27: The fashionably bred three-year-old bay colt Raqeeb-i-Azam, setting a scorching pace over seven furlongs, lifted the Colts & Fillies Trials Cup at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting held Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.

Partnered this time by jockey M. Nisar and trained by Taj Mohammad, the colt reduced the other six runners in the race to mere rubble, whilst registering his fourth win on the trot, leaving nearest rival Sweet Touch in his wake two and half lengths behind, with Paddock Fancy and Navaho Princess completing the frame.

The much heralded The Speed Star was reduced to a mere passenger. At no time in this race did the bay colt looked keen to win the race and it would not surprise me in the least of The Speed Star was tampered with and then sent out to contest in the seven furlong journey.

For young jockey M. Nisar and the owners of the winner M/s Shoukat Awan and Humayun Mirza, not to mention trainer Taj Mohammad, it was indeed great moments of happiness, especially for the young rider who picked up his first trophy. Without a shadow of doubt it will not be his last.

This foursome had something more to celebrate, when the bay filly Al Ashia, with a 32-pound advantage over last year’s champion colt, ended the pretensions of Steal The Show, while galloping to victory over six furlongs in the concluding race.

Mentioned in our last column that this would indeed be a tricky card to cope up with and it proved us right. Plenty of upsets were in store with the book makers reaping a rich harvest.

In the opener, Superb Star partnered by Tariq Mahmood made amends for his last outing by winning a close race from Sarafan and the raging favourite Sweet Grandy.

Not being satisfied with the performance of Khalid Nawaz astride Great Grandy, the Stewards revoked his license for a month.

In another upset in the following race, rank outsider Mark, piloted by Raees Ahmed, sprinting in from near the railing, won the five furlong sprint by two lengths after third placed Charismatic Eyes ridden by Nadim Akhtar interfered with second placed Power Plus, M. Yousuf aboard, throughout the race, which enabled Mark to win. The Favourite Classic Beauty did not even figure on the board.

Later in the afternoon Raees completed his double, riding home another outsider Guarantee in the fifth event, beating X’Tasy by two lengths.

In this race Rocket Fuel with five straight triumphs under his belt, let his large band of supporters down, running a very backward race and finishing amongst the also ran.

Also grabbing the limelight with a brace of winners was owner Makhdoom Hassan Raza, after his chestnut colt Royal Falcon ridden by evergreen S. Khan, beat the crowd fancy Micky Mikado II in a photo-finish. Then Makhdoom Hassan Raza had more moments to cherish, when his thorough bred chestnut filly Royal Fantasy with riding boy Naveed in the saddle, beat The Champion Strides by three and half lengths in the seventh race. Both winners are trained by Talib Hussain.

Golden Voice backed to the hilt, never let the connections down, winning the third race easily from Neelam Taab to register two wins in a row for owner Irfan Mehdi and jockey Arshad.

The next race meeting is scheduled for Wednesday Oct 30.
