KARACHI: Case against Harkat men shifted to sessions court

KARACHI, Oct 24: An anti-terrorism court transferred on Thursday a bomb blast case against the chief and deputy chief of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Aalmi to the ordinary court for trial.

Granting the application of the defence counsel, Abdul Waheed Katpur, for transfer of the case to the sessions court, Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 directed the jail authorities to produce the Aalmi leaders before the district and session judge, South, for trial on Nov 11.

Mohammad Imran and Hanif were charge-sheeted by the police for an explosion in a dustbin near a restaurant within the limits of the Darakhshan police early this year.

Abdul Waheed Katpur, counsel for Aalmi chief, Imran, contended that no one was killed or injured and there was no damage to either public or private property in the explosion.

He also argued that the incident had not caused any terror among the public.

The judge, who is conducting the trial inside the Central Prison, Karachi, granted the defence counsel’s application after hearing the arguments of Mr Katpur and special public prosecutor, Mazhar Qayyum, who did not oppose the application.

Meanwhile, Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti adjourned the hearing of another bomb blast case against the deputy chief of the Aalmi, Mohammed Hanif, till 29th.

The case pertained to a bomb blast on Jan 1 at the parking lot of the Marina Club in Gizri. Nine people were injured and 11 vehicles were damaged in the incident.

CONVICTED: The district and sessions judge, West, Ms Qaiser Iqbal, sentenced a man to five-year in jail for kidnapping and raping a woman.

Bahadur Ali, prosecuted for kidnapping the wife of Pervaiz in Site in August in Site, was also fined Rs2,000. He will have to undergo an additional three-month term in case of default on # payment.

DRIVER SENTENCED: The additional district and sessions judge, South, Farooq Ali Channa, sentenced a water carrier driver to a three-year term for killing a pedestrian in traffic incident.

The also ordered convict Azizur Rahman to pay Rs350,000 to the victim’s family as compensation.
