Talib and Khurram excel

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Railways led the table with 34 points on the opening day of the 11th National Junior Weightlifting Championship at the Pakistan Sports Complex.

Talib Hussain in the 69 kg category and Khurrum Shahzad in 77 kg were the gold winners for Railways while two of their other lifters - Ahmad Asghar (56 kg) and Javed Asghar (62 kg) collected silver medals.

Army, the defending champions were in fourth place on the table and had to be content with just one gold, Azhar Iqbal winning the 56 kg category with a total of 210 kg.

Wapda were in second place with one gold, a silver and a bronze and Punjab third.

Results: (Snatch, clean & jerk, total) 56 kg category: Azhar Iqbal (Army, 95, 115, 210), Ammad Asghar (Railways, 90, 117.5, 207.5); Usman Ghani (Punjab, 90, 105, 195).

62 kg category: Muhammad Ali (Wapda, 112.5, 140, 252.5), Javed Asghar (Railways, 100, 120, 220), Usman Akbar (Punjab, 90, 117.5, 207.5).

69 kg category: Talib Hussain (Railways, 105, 135, 240), Shakil Munir (Punjab, 110, 125, 235), Abdul Razzak (Wapda, 102.5, 127.5, 230).

77 kg category: Khurrum Shehzad (Railways, 127.5, 150, 277.5, Tahir Butt (Wapda, 117.5, 137.5, 255), Amir Nawaz (NWFP, 100, 140, 240).

Points table: Railways 34, Wapda 23, Punjab 22, Army 20, NWFP 7, Islamabad 3, Sindh 2.
