KARACHI, Oct 14: KESC produced a stunning performance on the opening day of President PFF Cup football championship when they electrocuted KWSB 4-1 at People’s Sports Complex Monday.
KESC applied pressure straight from the beginning but the first half was not as eventful as the second session, which saw the winners scoring three goals, and KWSB getting a consolation one.
KESC broke the ice with a 15th-minute penalty through Habib Ghulam who made no mistake in slamming home the opening goal.
The remaining part of the first period didn’t provide much fireworks except three efforts from the KESC denied by KWSB goalkeeper Arshad.
First Sohail Ishaque’s 27th-minute header was well taken by Arshad, who then punched away Aftab’s try in the 30th minute. Mohammad Ali was frustrated a minute before the half time hooter.
KESC began the second half with attacking football as diminutive Sohail put his side 2-0 ahead in the 59th minute.
In a rare attack barely after 60 seconds, KWSB got what they were looking for — a goal which proved to be the last fling as KESC kept them at bay until the end.
KWSB’s Inam Bukhsh, who somehow wriggled through the KESC defence, was hacked down by a defender from behind within the penalty box, before Akram converted the spot kick.
The goal helped KWSB gather momentum and they raided in the 67th minute but Imran’s virtually a grass-cutting shot from the edge of the box was blocked by KESC goalkeeper Zulfiqar.
Three minutes later, KESC came near scoring another when Aurangzaib got rid of his marker and lashed in a towering 20-yard drive only to see ball going into Arshad’s hands.
KWSB were in hot water as their rivals pumped in twice within a space of four minutes that enabled KESC take an unassailable lead.
KWSB were rushed off to their feet in defence in the 75th minute after a KESC attack which ended in close range goal by substitute Abdul Waheed who met no resistance before giving the ball a subtle push into the net.
Dil Murad threatened KESC with an aggressive move in the 78th minute but squandered the opportunity after being timely tackled by defender Ali Akbar.
Lal Mohammad, who was cleverly set up by Waheed, wrapped up the 4-1 victory with an opportunist 79th-minute 16-yard shot past a baffled Arshad.
Sohail was in action the next minute, making inroads into KWSB territory only to see his half-hearted effort slamming on to the side-netting.
