KARACHI: Reckless driving claims four lives

KARACHI, Oct 12: Reckless driving claimed four lives in the city on Saturday.

A motorcyclist died in a road accident near Metropole hotel. He was hit by a taxi. The motorcyclist, later identified as Ansar Ayub, was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died. The taxi driver, Saeed, who took the injured to the hospital, was taken into custody by police. Ansar is stated to be an employee of an intelligence agency.

A young man died when a recklessly-driven bus collided with the motorcycle he was driving near Hamid Hospital in Quaidabad police limits. The man, identified as Irshad Husain, aged 34, died on the spot. His wife Zainab, aged 28, was injured. The bus driver escaped, but police impounded the bus.

The conductor of a minibus of route W-11 (JF-0115), Danish, aged 28, died when the bus overturned while negotiating a sharp turn near the Old Exhibition. He was resident of New Karachi. Four passengers, including Shamsher and Shakil, were injured. They were rushed to a hospital.

The driver of a pickup died and four vegetable sellers were slightly injured when the pickup they were travelling on went out of the driver’s control and hit against a wall on Super Highway near the New Sabzimandi. The driver, Mohammed Nawaz, died on the spot.

ROBBERY: One robbery was committed in the city on Saturday, police said.

Four bandits barged into Javed Ali’s house in Block-S of North Nazimabad. They held the occupants of the house hostage at gunpoint, and got away with Rs120,000, jewellery and other valuables.

The family said the cash was their savings, and it was meant for the expenses of heart surgery of a family member.

CARJACKING: Nineteen vehicles — seven cars and 12 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Saturday, police said.

Three cars were hijacked. Four others were stolen.

Five motorcycles were hijacked. Seven others were stolen in various areas of the city, including North Karachi, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Nazimabad and Saddar.

DIES: A man who had been shot and wounded near Lea Market a few days ago died in a hospital.

Police said bandits robbed Shaukat, and when he put up resistance they shot and injured him. He was admitted to a hospital where he died. He worked as cashier with a private transport company.

DROWNED: A man, who was in his early 20s, drowned in the sea. The dead body was found near an island close to the city.
