AIOU library scam’s main accused acquitted
ISLAMABAD, Oct 6: The executive council, the supreme decision making body of the Allama Iqbal Open University, has acquitted the main accused of the library scam, allegedly due to the pressure of a top government functionary, sources told Dawn.
The sources said the vice-chancellor, Prof Syed Altaf Hussain, called an emergency meeting of the council on Oct 3, whereas it was scheduled for Oct 5.
A member of the executive council, on condition of anonymity, said some high up had asked the V-C to exonerate Dr Parveen Liaqat, who was involved in the misappropriation of library funds.
“For the last one and half years, the varsity has engaged teachers to probe the scam by constituting three inquiry committees and had invested a lot of money,” he added.
When contacted, Dr Altaf Hussain said: “Unless the minutes of the meeting are released officially, I am bound not to speak about the proceedings.”
To a question, he said no body was interfering in the varsity affairs and it was wrong to put blame on the university administration to give favour to Ms Liaqat.—Our Reporter
