KARACHI, Oct 4: The city government has selected the old building of its medical and dental college situated in Federal B. Area for the proposed cardiac hospital.

The governing body of the Karachi Medical and Dental College, which met in the KMDC premises with City Nazim Naimatullah Khan in the chair, approved the scheme in principle.

The governing body thanked Dr Abdus Samad for accepting the offer of the city government to serve the citizens of Karachi.

The Nazim said residents of Orangi Town, North Karachi and the adjoining localities were facing problems and difficulties to reach the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and there was a great need for the establishment of one more cardiac hospital to cater to the needs of the population of these areas.

The meeting was informed that spade work for the establishment of the cardiovascular hospital had been started.

The meeting expressed concern that heirs of Dr Anwar, ex- professor of the KMDC who was killed by terrorists, have not yet been paid compensation. The general body approved the appointment of the widow of Dr Anwar, who is a doctor, in the KMDC. The governor of Sindh was requested to extend financial help to the family of the deceased professor.

The governing body decided to continue the KMDC’s admission policy and a four-member committee was formed for further consideration of the existing policy.

It was informed that this year 950 candidates were interviewed for 80 seats in the KMDC and all admissions were made strictly on merit.

The governing body took notice of shortage of teachers in the KMDC and requested the Sindh government to allow recruitment of teaching staff for the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and the KMDC. It was requested that until such permission was granted, ad hoc appointments may be allowed so that the college functioning did not suffer.

In order to consider the grant of financial powers to the KMDC principal, a two-member committee, comprising EDOs health and fiance was also set up.

The meeting enhanced the limit of loan amount for the college employees from Rs0.5 million to Rs1 million.

The governing body expressed satisfaction over the development works at the KMDC building.—APP
