KARACHI: Water shortage in many areas

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 2: Several parts of the city either remained without water or received scanty supply on Wednesday, leaving no choice for the residents of the affected localities but to buy private tankers at exorbitant rates.

The worst-affected localities included Clifton’s Block 2, Dhoraji, Sharfabad, Adamjee Nagar, parts of PECHS Blocks 2 and 6, Lyari and some localities in the Old City area.

At a time when water shortage had already been persisting in all the areas hooked to the Hub source, complaints of acute water shortage continued pouring into newspaper offices from different localities.

People residing in the vicinity of Senior Model School in PECHS Block 2 and the green-belt area of PECHS Block 6 complained that although their localities often remained without water for days, the staff of the KWSB pumping station had not yet managed to ensure uninterrupted water supply.

Residents of the sprawling townships of Baldia, Orangi, North Karachi, Surjani and parts of Shershah, who had been experiencing water shortage problem in the wake of reduced supply from the Hub dam’s reservoir, said since insufficient quantity of water was being supplied to them after every four days, they have no choice but to either purchase private tankers at exorbitant rates or to consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

They demanded of the City Nazim and the KWSB managing- director to direct the concerned officials to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of water to their localities on alternative days, instead of after every four days as the scanty supply currently being released to their localities for two hours after every four days was not enough and hence could not be stored for four or five days.

ORANGABAD: Residents of Orangabad, Bara Maidan, have been facing serious difficulties for the last six months because of stoppage of their water supply allegedly by the Liaquatabad Town Nazim.

Area people told Dawn that the North Nazimabad Nazim, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, had done nothing to solve the problem despite repeated requests, both written and verbal.

They said the situation had forced people to use subsoil water, which is highly polluted because of the locality’s vicinity to a tributary of the Lyari River. People also fear a breakout of epidemics as a result of the continuous use of polluted water.

They alleged that the Liaquatabad Nazim had diverted the water supply of Orangabad to his own constituency.

They appealed to City Nazim Naimatullah Khan to look into the matter and help solve the problem.
