Competitive card drawn for midweek

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 1: A competitive card of five events, has been drawn up for the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse Wednesday.

All events will be contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.

The fifth and feature event, a class VII division V handicap race has only seven acceptors, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Of them three seems to be on chance, namely, Flying Fin, Moment To Moment and Science Fiction. All are in form and have been showing good performances. They should fight it out to pick up the spoils. The other four acceptors have not yet appeared on the board and chances of any one proving a dark horse are bleak.

The other events, race one to four, are packed with form contestants, at least four in each race or even more. Winner picking in these races may prove a difficult task for the punters, if all of the form ones are on job. The first race will be held at 3.pm.

The plea to hold once a week racing in Lahore has sparked off a sharp reaction and has been dismissed forcefully by all concerned who have warned of its disastrous effects on horse breeding and racing industry.

Recently a suggestion was made to the Lahore Race Club (LRC) by certain interested quarters to revise its racing schedule to hold them once a week.

Race horse-owners, trainers and riders have opposed the idea tooth and nail claiming it would hit them hard financially, as well as all those connected with the industry.

They said the industry was already in the throes of an economic crisis and such a proposal, if implemented, would ruin them all.

They were of the opinion that the root cause of recent crisis was heavy taxation particularly entertainment tax.

Because of the high rate of tax the LRC is under stress and unable to provide reasonable stake-money. This had an over-all adverse affect plunging the whole industry in economic crises.

They said that the proposal was put forth by those, who are induced by self-aggrandisement. No well-wisher of racing could ever think of making such a damaging proposal.

The LRC seems to have paid no heed to the proposal and is continuing with its twice a week racing schedule by announcing a five-race card for Wednesday (Oct 2).
