Electricity supply restored to Bajaur

Published September 28, 2002

BAJAUR, Sept 27: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has restored the supply of power to all areas of the Bajaur Agency, which remained without the utility for about three months.

Wapda suspended the electricity supply to a number of areas of the agency on the orders of the NWFP government to force the tribal people to allow installation of power meters at their residences, business centres and workplaces.

The people of the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas came out on the streets when Wapda started installing meters in the tribal agencies. As the tribal people refused to comply with the decision, Wapda disconnected the power supply to them.

According to sources, the electricity supply was restored to all parts of the Bajaur Agency on the directives of the federal government. Wapda has put off meter installation in Fata till Oct 27 when the local government elections are scheduled to held there.
