Sanchez-Vicario opens with easy victory

TOKYO, Sept 16: Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maja Matevzic of Slovenia in the first round of the $585,000 Princess Cup Monday.

The Spaniard, who headed the WTA rankings in early 1995, took a little under an hour to get past her unseeded opponent as she dictated the match from the baseline under a closed roof at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.

In other first-round matches, Austrian Patricia Wartusch overcame Japanese wild card Saori Obata 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 while American Amy Frazier ousted Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

KUERTEN WINS

SALVADOR (Brazil): Gustavo Kuerten beat unseeded Argentine Guillermo Coria in a dramatic final on Sunday to win the Brazil Open and claim his first title for 13 months.

The former world number one, whose last title was in Cincinnati in August last year, saved a match point on his way to a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win in a bad-tempered encounter littered with disputed line calls.—Reuters
