KARACHI: Reckless driving claims 3 lives

KARACHI, Sept 13: Reckless driving claimed three lives in the city on late Thursday night and Friday.

A policeman died in a road accident on M. A. Jinnah Road on late Thursday night. Police said that a head constable, Mohammed Arif, aged 30, was driving his motorcycle (LHL-9896) when he was knocked down by a speeding minibus of route W-11.

He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The bus driver sped off after the accident.

A young man died when the Suzuki van he was driving overturned at Native Jetty bridge on late Thursday night.

Police said that Aqeel, aged 35, was driving a Suzuki van that overturned near Native Jetty bridge seriously injuring him. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

An unidentified man died in a road accident in Saeedabad on Friday.

Police said that an unidentified pedestrian was run over by an unknown speeding vehicle near Hub River Road in the morning. He was seriously injured and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. He died on the way when he was being taken to Civil Hospital.

Nearly 17 children suffered minor injuries when the bus they were travelling on slipped off Super Highway.

A bus of route 4-K, hired as contract carriage by a school, was carrying 17 children to an amusement park situated off Super Highway when it slipped off the highway resulting in injuries to the children.

Three children were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from where they were sent home after first aid.

FOOD POISONING: More than forty persons, including children, fell ill due to food poisoning after they ate sweetmeats distributed in a locality in Malir Extension, Khokhrapar, on Friday on the occasion of a marriage engagement.

Following an engagement ceremony in F-N Area in Khokhrapar No 1, a family distributed sweetmeats (laddu) in the neighbourhood. After eating the sweetmeats, people fell ill, having symptoms such as vomiting and stomach pain.

People informed police and the Edhi Foundation. Ambulances shifted the affected people to nearby private hospitals.

Police and rangers also reached the spot.

Around 10-15 victims had been admitted to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre, sources said.

Sources at the hospital, however, said that only three children had been admitted to the hospital.

The bridegroom, Anwar alias Arif, did not eat the sweetmeat, but some of his family members ate the sweetmeats and they also fell ill.

Police said that the sweetmeat was bought from a sweetmeats’ shop at Khokhrapar No 2.

The owner of the shop, identified as Ashraf, had been taken into custody and the shop had been sealed, police said.

ELECTROCUTED: A four-year-old boy died of electrocution in Gulberg on Friday.

Aamir, aged four, touched the electric wire of a washing machine when his mother was washing clothes in their house in Bengali Para, Gulberg. He died on the spot, police said.
