Canal breach damages crops

KHAIRPUR, Sept 12: A breach occured at the embankment of Lalan Wah here late Wednesday night at Mehrab Maitalo village in Kingri taluka.

The water entered the village and damaged houses while two poultry farms were inundated.

Earlier, the villagers had informed the irrigation officials of the east division about the weak Lalan Wah embankments could develop a breach.

The villagers criticised the irrigation department officials, saying that the had taken no action in this regard. They said that the surging waters had bad affected local sugarcane and maize crops.

The breach was later plugged by the villagers on self-help basis. No irrigation officials reached the spot despite being informed by the villagers.

Meanwhile, Shaheed Minor also developed a 25-foot-wide breach late Wednesday night at Sadar Ji Bhatiyoon. At least five houses were damaged. A 1,000-acre banana field was also affected.
