Fata senators to be elected by direct vote

ISLAMABAD, Sept 9: The President on Monday issued two enactments providing for holding of direct elections in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

The government has adopted two schemes for election to the Senate. Election for eight Fata seats would be held through a direct vote, whereas the remaining 92 senators would be elected by the members of the provincial assemblies.

No date has been fixed for the Senate election from Fata.

The Election to the Members of Senate from Federally Administered Tribal Areas Order, 2002, has amended the existing procedure for the election of senators from Fata. Earlier, Fata MNAs were the electoral college for Senate election for Fata.

The following constituencies have been created for eight Senate seats from Fata: South Waziristan Agency, North Waziristan, Kurram Agency, Orakzai Agency, Khyber Agency, Mohmand Agency, Bajaur Agency, Frontier Regions, and the eighth senator would be elected by the voters of tribal areas residing in Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki, Bannu, Kohat and Peshawar.
