KARACHI, Sept 8: A jobless young man committed suicide in his house in Landhi on Sunday.
Amir Mohammed, aged 26, got married around eight months ago. He had been jobless for quite some time past.
Police said that Amir was suffering from depression. On Sunday he locked himself up in his room and consumed poison. He was rushed to Jinnah Post- graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The family did not allow post-mortem of the body, sources at the hospital said.
CARJACKING: Nineteen vehicles — nine cars and 10 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Sunday, police said.
Three cars were hijacked. Six others were stolen.
Four motorcycles were hijacked. Six others were stolen.
Police also claimed on Sunday to have recovered three cars and two motorcycles.
FACTORY EXPLOSION: A 55-year-old man and an eight-year-old boy died and 11 others were injured as a result of an explosion in a factory at Korangi on Sunday afternoon.
Those who died were Sher Jang, aged 55, and Shahzad, aged eight.
The explosion was caused due to a rupture in a hydrogen cylinder during the ultra-high temperature treatment (UHT) process needed in the manufacture of banaspati ghee, a senior police officer said.
He denied the impression that the explosion was caused due to boiler explosion, and said the boiler was intact in its place while the rest of the industrial unit had suffered considerable damage because of the explosion.
The explosion was so intense that it blew away the factory’s roof and splinters from the factory landed in the neighbouring residential area.
An eight-year old boy, Shahzad, was hit by a splinter in his house in Lashari Para, Ali Akbar goth, Korangi. He and other injured persons were rushed to the JPMC. The boy died in the hospital.
The explosion occurred after 1pm at Noor Saeed Private Limited, a ghee factory, located in the residential area of sector 50-C in Korangi. As a result of the explosion, Sher Jang, a worker at the factory, died on the spot. His dismembered body was sent to the JPMC.
Six other workers were injured in the explosion. They were Saleem, Imran, Akbar, Faisal, Allahyar, and Mehboob.
Two men, a woman and a 10-year-old girl were injured when they were hit by splinters coming from the factory. They were identified as Shamimun Nisa, her 10-year-old daughter Mehar, Sikandar Ali, and Bashir.
The factory premises also suffered considerable damage due the impact of the explosion.
Panic gripped the area and people came out of their houses hearing the massive explosion.
Police claimed to have taken the factory-owner, Mehtab Ali, into custody and registered a case.
ARRESTED: Police arrested on Sunday four members of a gang of bandits in North Nazimabad and recovered a sizable amount of cash and other valuables from their possession. The bandits were involved in several house robberies in the city.
Police recovered Pakistani currency and US dollars, 3 TT pistols, magazines, and valuables.
Police said that earlier on July 7 a house robbery was committed in Dr Sulaiman’s house from where bandits got away with cash, jewellery, and other valuables.
