LRC dispute resolved

Published September 8, 2002

LAHORE, Sept 7: The dispute between the turf accountants  and the  Lahore  Race  Club (LRC) over  financial  matters  has  been resolved  and an agreement reached between the two which will  be effective for a month on experimental basis.

The dispute lingering for over a year concerns the  volume of contribution made by the turf accountants  to  the LRC. The dispute had taken a serious turn when the former  walked out of the club premises, shutting their manually operated tote windows (Motws) Wednesday before the start of races. The  bets were  made solely on computerised tote totalisator set up in  the club four years ago by a British firm Data Tote.

Sources  said an agreement was reached, at a meeting  between the  representatives of the affected parties  which  was  also attended  by some leading race-horse owners the other day. The agreement will be effective for a  period of  one month, from Sept 8 to Oct 8, on a trial  basis. If found workable, would be extended for a further period agreed upon by the turf accountants, LRC and owners.

Under the agreement turf accountants will increase the volume of  contribution  and  also contribute some  amount  towards  the stake-money to be awarded to the winners of meeting races to make the  prize-money  look handsome. A seven  point  working  formula aimed at improving racing standards and safeguarding interests  of of all concerned was agreed upon also.—A.G.
