PESHAWAR, Sept 7: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), NWFP chapter, has denounced the detention of its leaders in Lahore by the Punjab police, and called upon the election commission to take notice of what they called “the unlawful act” of the government.
The MMA, an alliance of six religo-political parties, passed a joint resolution at the coronation ceremony of Darul Qura here on Saturday, and condemned the government’s action.
The resolution said the government wanted to thwart the alliance’s efforts to launch its second phase of the train march from Lahore to Karachi and to postpone the general election.
Despite lifting the ban on political activities, the police had detained MMA leaders, it said, adding that such tactics might instigate political workers and could eventually lead the country towards anarchy.
Ulema committees were constituted to lead the MMA candidates’ election campaigns in the Frontier province.
CORONATION: The religious coronation of various classes of students at the seminaries, run by different schools of thought, started with the Dastar Bandi (a tradition of putting turban on head) of 822 students here at Darul Qura Nimakmandi on Saturday.
The patron-in-chief of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) chief of the Almi Majlis Khatam-i-Nabuwwat Pakistan, Maulana Khan Mohammad, was the chief guest of the ceremony, which was attended by a large number of students and their parents.
The seminary principal, Qari Fiazur Rehman, told Dawn that more than 25,000 students from different schools of thought would complete their religious education in the province.
He said some 16,000 students only of the Deoband school of thought would complete their academic career by the end of the current academic year.
IT EDUCATION: Speaking as chief guest at a function held at the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Peshawar campus, the governor said the government realized the importance and role of Information Technology in the economic development of the country.
