LAHORE, Sept 2: Heavy rain that hit the provincial capital on Monday morning submerged most roads and localities of the city as temperatures fell to 27.2 degrees Celsius from Sunday’s 33.7 degrees.
The downpour started at around 8:30am and continued till 12:30pm. The meteorological office recorded 51mm of rain in Township and its adjoining localities, 56mm in Shahdara, 36mm in the city and 20mm at the airport.
The showers brought relief to the people stricken by sultry weather for the last several days as many switched off their airconditioners.
Long traffic jams in different parts of the city were seen due to water standing there. It took the civic authorities several hours to clear water from the roads and smoothen the traffic flow.
The depression around Laxmi Chowk and certain parts of The Mall were the worst hit areas along with the other low-lying areas of the city. Traffic in these areas remained virtually suspended as drainage got clogged and water could not be cleared.
The telecommunication network in the city was the worst hit due to the showers as thousands of telephones went dead while hundreds complained of cross-talk. Power supply to several areas of the city also remained suspended during the day.
However, no loss of life was reported till the filing of this report.
According to the Met Office, widespread rains were reported during the last 24 hours from different parts of the country, including Islamabad, Multan, D.G.Khan, Jhang, Faisalabad, Balakot, Risalpur, Muzaffarabad, Jhelum, Sialkot, Attock, Kamra, Kund, Zhob, Saidu Sharif, Besham, Mirkhani, and Shinkiari.
The Met Office has forecast more rain during the next 24 hours in Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore and Bahawalpur divisions.
According to the flood warning centre, all rivers in the country were flowing below the low level and would also maintain the same flow during the next 24 hours.
As such, there was no danger of flood.
