PPP workers on hunger strike

SIALKOT, Sept 2: Local PPP leaders went on a hunger strike on Sunday to protest against the rejection of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s nomination for the National Assembly.

The protesters have set up a camp at the busy Allama Iqbal Chowk here.

Earlier, the protesting PPP workers staged a rally at Allama Iqbal Chowk and chanted anti-government slogans.

According to a press release issued here on Sunday, the local PPP leadership termed the rejection of Ms Bhutto’s nomination papers a highly biased and discriminatory act of the military government.

BLACK DAY: Doctors observed a “Black Day” to protest the imposition of professional tax.

They wore black bands on their arms as a mark of protest.

According to a press release, the Pakistan Medical Association’s Sialkot chapter held a meeting that was presided over by Dr Imran Idrees Butt. The perturbed doctors demanded that the government should immediately abolish the unjustified levy. The tax amounts to Rs7,000 per doctor.

TREE-PLANTATION: Over 300,000 saplings would be planted in Narowal district this monsoon.

According to a press release issued here, the Narowal forest department has adopted special measures to ensure maximum participation of masses in the tree-plantation campaign.

POLIO: No polio case has been reported in the district for the last three years. The district will be declared polio-free this year.

According to a press release, Daska deputy DHO Dr Zafar Awan Dr Zafar said that 561,428 under-fives would be administered anti-polio vaccine in the district during the upcoming phase of the campaign.

The district health department has formed 1,116 teams and finalised all arrangements for the campaign in both Sialkot and Narowal districts.
