GUJRANWALA, Sept 2: At least eight public places have been allotted to candidates for holding public meetings during their election campaign across the district.

According to a district government notification issued on Monday, the Mini Stadium, Liaquat Bagh in Gujranwala, Ladies Parks, Camping Ground in Kamoke, MC High School Ground, Railway Ground in Wazirabad and Old Lorry Adda, Filling Station Ground in Naushera Virkan were allotted for public meetings.

However, leaders and activists of political parties demanded that more public places should be specified in the district.

CAUGHT: As many as 45 power thieves were caught red-handed on Monday by the Gujranwala Electric Power Company raiding teams.

City circle SE Sheikh Phool Muhammad received an information that consumers, including landlords, Nazimeen, industrialists and politicians of remote areas, were involved in power theft. He inducted at least half a dozen SDOs to conduct raids and arrested the power thieves.

The teams conducted raid on villages of Talwandi Musa Khan, Bhatti Bhango, Rehan Chak, Nokhan Sundhawan, Datewali, Chandiala, Ladheywala Warraich, Qazi Kot Naushera Virkan, Tetley, Qila Dedar Singh and Alipur Chattha and caught them red-handed stealing electricity.

ELECTROCUTED: A girl and her mother on Monday were electrocuted in Rasul Nagar village in Alipur Chattha.

Shahida Bibi was washing the floor of her house when she suddenly touched a pedestal fan with her wet hands. She received a shock and started crying for help. As her mother Rasulan Bibi tried to save her by pulling back the electrified fan she also received a severe shock. Both of them died while being taken to the DHQ hospital, Alipur Chattha.

ARRESTED: At least 90 pesticide dealers were arrested on Monday by a joint raiding team of police and district administration for providing spurious pesticides.

The arrests were made from Gujranwala, Kamoke, Wahando, Naushera Virkan and Qila Dedar Singh.

Farmers of these areas had met Punjab governor in Lahore and apprised him of the spurious pesticides being provided to them. Upon this, the governor directed the district government to launch a special campaign against pesticide dealers.

The teams conducted raids on shops and godowns of pesticide dealers and arrested them besides taking a huge quantity of pesticides into custody.
