ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: Some 40 former parliamentarians have paid their outstanding arrears of parliament lodges and government hostels, a source told Dawn on Thursday.

The source said the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had to recover Rs5.3 million from 102 ex-MNAs and senators. “Of which, Rs0.9 million was recovered from 40 ex-parliamentarians.”

Those, who have submitted their nomination papers to contest elections, have retired their arrears, the source said adding “But those, who are not taking part in the polls, are still reluctant to pay the liabilities.”

He said the arrears were paid after the announcement of election-2002 schedule.

It may be mentioned that the CDA had already sent a letter to the Election Commission requesting it to disqualify those who were not paying their dues.

The source said some of the ex-parliamentarians, who had paid their dues, had to pay the cost of some luxurious items which they had taken with them while leaving the lodges and hostels.

These cases would also be sent to the commission.
