KARACHI: 17km elevated corridor to be built under KMTP

KARACHI, Aug 29: Sindh governor Muhammedmian Soomro on Wednesday stressed the need for an integrated system to bring improvement in the existing transport system in the city with the utilization of modern facilities.

He was presiding over a meeting at the governor’s house in which details of the Karachi Mass Transit Programme (KMTP) and the proposed Magnetic Train System were considered in details.

Director general KMTP Zahirul Islam and Dr Wagnor of the Inter Glob Switzerland gave the briefing.

The governor directed that a programme be devised for providing fast and unhindered commuting facilities in all parts of the city, particularly far-off areas.

He said that this work should be carried out by integrating the entire system of light rail, circular railways, large buses and mini-buses.

About the proposed Magnetic Train System, Dr Wagnor said it was the most appropriate system for a fast emerging commercial hub like Karachi. He said the system would be called the Karachi Magno Metro and, according to initial reports, its fare would be Rs1 per kilometre which would be within the reach of middle and low-income people.

DG KMTP Zahirul Islam said that under the KMTP there would be a 17-kilometre elevated corridor from Merewether Tower via M.A. Jinnah Road to Sohrab Goth.

The meeting was also attended by city Nazim Naimatullah Khan. The governor appreciated the interest being taken by the Nazim to improve the city transport system.—APP
