KARACHI, Aug 28: The education department of the city government has chalked out different programmes to celebrate a literacy week (September 1 to 7) and the International Literacy Day on Sep 8.

Sources in the education department said a majority of the events would be held at school level. Three awareness walks would be held on Sep 7, involving schoolchildren, their parents, teachers, nazimeen and councillors.

A schedule of events was finalized at a meeting of district officers (education) and director (non-formal education), with EDO (education) Prof Rais Alvi in the chair, on Aug 27. The school management committees would meet on Sep 2.

Poster competitions would be held at Town level on Sep 3, while speech competition in English, Urdu or Sindhi would be held at Town level on Sep 4.

The literacy awareness walks would be held in three different Towns on Sep 7.

The first walk would be organized by Saddar Town from Boat Basin to Kharkar Chowrangi at 8.30am, second by Jamshed Town at the Mazar-i-Quaid at 10.30am, while the third walk would be held from KDA chowrangi to McDonald’s outlet in North Nazimabad Town.

As part of the literacy week, a seminar would be held at one educational institution premises on Sep 8. As a routine affair, admissions to primary schools will be opened for all the leftovers on Sept 9.

Letters would be written by all schoolchildren to their parents, nazimeen and councillors to promote literacy. Town schools would celebrate the events in coordination with the union or town nazimeen, while students of non-formal basic education would also be eligible to take part in the programmes.
