Stunning wins for Rashid and Sultan

By Latafat Ali Siddiqui

TORONTO, Aug 27: Pakistan’s two inexperienced players Rashid Jaffer and Sultan Siddiqui scored amazing victories to enter the penultimate round of the World Bridge Championships’s Pair contest in Montreal Monday. But the other pair Abdul Rahman Allana and Jan-e-Alam went down fighting.

Sultan and Jaffer really showed their skill in the event which attracted entries of 400 pairs from across the world.

Earlier, the tough McConnell Cup final became an all American affair as their two top teams Radin and Sanborn survived anxious moments to set up their clash for the gold medal.

The other interesting event of the championships, the Power Rosenblum Cup, is now in its final stages with four teams, including Munawar of Indonesia, battling for the top honour. Three other surviving teams are from Poland, Sweden and Italy.

Italian team of Attanasio pulled off the biggest upset of the Rosenblum Cup when it knocked out favourite Nickell team of America.

The host Canada today won the gold medal when its seniors team defeated USA in the final Monday. The bronze medal went to The Netherlands.
