Mountaineers make history
LAUSANNE (Switzerland), Aug 27: Mountaineers from India and Pakistan made history here this week when they took part in a joint climb of Les Diablerets peak in the Swiss Alps and flew the two country’s flags at the summit.
The first-ever joint climb by Pakistan and Indian mountaineers, it was staged to highlight the problems of the Siachen Glacier in Kashmir which is surrounded by Indian and Pakistan troops.
“The glacier is being polluted by the shelling and the presence of tens of thousands of troops from both sides. We should be protecting the mountainside,” said Indian climber Harish Kapadia. Pakistan climber Nazir Sabir said the plan was to create ‘peace zones’ in mountain ranges.—AFP
