HYDERABAD, Aug 27: The intermittent power supply suspension during the last 24 hours not only resulted in an unending nightmare for power consumers but also exposed the fragile generation and transmission system of Wapda and Hesco.
The power supply was suspended with the first drop of rain at about 12:30pm on Monday and remained cut till 4:00pm and interruptions continued up to midnight.
A long spell of interruption again occurred in some areas on Tuesday at about 3:00am and the power was restored at 9:30am. Up to 7:45pm, the power supply was interrupted at least on six occasions and was not restored till the filing of this report.
Latifabad, Qasimabad and Hyderabad talukas have also received no water supply as this is dependent on power supply.
A spokesman for Hesco, however, said due to technical fault in the 500kv Jamshoro Grid Station on Monday night due to rains, an interruption had taken place which affected power supply to Hyderabad, Nooriabad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Thatta, Mirpurkhas and other towns of the lower Sindh.
He said power supply was restored at 9:30am.
The spokesman, however, made no mention of half a dozen other interruptions after 9:30am.
When the Met office was contacted on telephone, the in charge said there was no rainfall that could be measured.
WASA: Hyderabad taluka Nazim Haji Moinuddin Shaikh lashed out at the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) officials for failing to drain out drain water from some main roads of the city.
During his visit to Gari Khata, Station Road, Odean Cinema area, Islamabad, Mukhi Garden, New Cloth Market and Haji Umaid Ali Road, on Monday, the taluka Nazim was shocked to see the main roads submerged under dirty water due to the blockage of the sewage system.
He directed the health officer, Dr Imtiaz Memon, to get in touch with Wasa officials and tell them about the terrible condition of the roads, which were being destroyed due to accumulation of dirty water.
He also urged the director general, HDA, to take notice of the prevailing situation and to save the city roads from destruction.
ARREST SLAMMED: A group of activists of the Sindh National Party (Bhambhro group) observed a token hunger strike here on Tuesday against arrest of their leader, Agha Shamshad Mughal.
Talking to newsmen, Ashraf Noonari and other SNP leaders said Mughal was implicated in false cases. They demanded Mughal should be remanded in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the district police said Mughal was involved in the murder of former Hyderabad city DSP Allah Bux Jaskani, former Phuleli SHO Bashir Ahmad Shaikh and Punjabi Students Federation leader Mohammad Ali Shehki, and the attack on the Phuleli police station in 1998.
