Lawyers observe black day today

LAHORE, Aug 26: Lawyers will observe a black day on Tuesday to condemn the promulgation of the Legal Framework Order 2002 by President Pervez Musharraf and press for its repeal.

The black day will begin with the hoisting of black flags on the offices of Bar associations and Bar councils throughout the country followed by an oath of allegiance to the constitution by lawyers.

They will attend courts with black armbands afterwards. Various Bar bodies will hold meetings against the promulgation of the LFO.

The black day is being observed on the unanimous call of the Pakistan Bar Council, the Supreme Court Bar Association, provincial bar councils and district bar associations.

The Bar bodies have decided not to challenge the LFO 2002 in the Supreme Court as the judges have taken oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order and to seek cooperation of political parties in their struggle against it.

Lahore High Bar Association president Chaudhry Muzammal Khan and other office bearers said, in a statement on Monday, the LFO was an insult to the ideas of the founders of Pakistan and against the basic teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnat and deserved to be struck down.

They said Bar members throughout the country were observing the black day on Tuesday considering resistance against the undemocratic attempt of the president to prevent the establishment of genuine democratic institutions in the country as their constitutional and moral responsibility.

They would continue their struggle till the withdrawal of the undemocratic order.
