Alex to join Charlton

TOKYO, Aug 24: Japan midfielder Alex is poised to join English Premier League club Charlton Athletic on a full transfer rather than on loan, Japanese media reported Saturday.

The Brazilian-born Alex, who switched nationalities last November and played for co-hosts Japan at the World Cup this summer, could sign for around $3.8 million Wednesday, according to the Nikkan Sports newspaper.

The 25-year-old, who has played for J-League club Shimizu S-Pulse for the past six seasons, will reportedly move to The Valley on a five-year deal worth an estimated $1.2 million a year.

“I know I will have to work hard here but I had no intention of returning to Japan,” Alex was quoted.—Reuters
