KARACHI, Aug 24: A young girl died and seven others were injured on Saturday when the bus they were travelling on overturned in Liaquatabad.

Police said two buses of route 1-D began trying to overtake each other from Liaquatabad No 10. When the buses reached near Firdous shopping centre, one of them (JA-6268) overturned. Eight persons, including three women, who were travelling on the bus were injured.

The injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where one of them, Sumaira, aged 18, died. Two of the injured were admitted to the hospital.

The drivers of both the buses fled the scene.

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly run over by a police van on Sharea Faisal in Airport police limits. She died on the spot.

Witnesses said a recklessly-driven police mobile van (SP-5748), on which was written “Investigation-II,” hit a seven-year-old girl while she, with with her father, was walking across Sharea Faisal.

Police, said Mehreen, aged seven, resident of Green Town, Shah Faisal Colony, with her father, Mukhtar Anjum, was walking across the road when a motorcycle hit her. She was rushed to the JPMC where doctors pronounced her dead.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist denied that he had hit the girl, but policemen severely manhandled him and allegedly tried to implicate him in the accident. Police also declined to give the name of the motorcyclist.

An unidentified man was run over by an unknown vehicle on Suparco Road in Mochko.

ROBBERY: A robbery was committed in S. M. Shahid’s house in Saba Avenue, Phase-V Extension, Defence Housing Authority, on Friday night.

Four bandits barged into the house where they held the family hostage at gunpoint and got away with Rs14,000, 200 US dollars, jewellery and other valuables.

Mr Shahid said that the bandits, two of them holding TT pistols and two others holding daggers in their hands, made the family hostage. They used foul language against the women, including his 92-year-old mother, and remained at the house for about one hour.

ROBBER-COPS HELD: A deputy superintendent of police has been placed under suspension and two policemen, who had been caught red-handed by people while five robber cops were looting those attending a wedding ceremony in Kharadar on late Thursday night, have been arrested.

A spokesman for police said IG Sindh Syed Kamal Shah took serious notice suspended DSP Investigation (property) Anwar Husain. He also ordered registration of a robbery case against ASI Raja Intesar Anwar and constable Sher Bahadur, who were in police custody. Their accomplice policemen, Abdul Ghaffar, Obaidullah and Mohammed Irfan, were absconding.
