RAWALPINDI, Aug 23: The government has decided to equip the National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP), with quality arms, ammunition and wireless equipment-apparently to cope with the terrorist threats, source said.
The assistant inspector general police NH&MP Pervez Rathore, when contacted, said in recognition of their good performance, the government had decided to extend the police network upto Karachi and equip the police with arms and ammunitions.
The AIG said two Police Lines and two SP offices would also be established for NH&MP next year.
Arms and ammunition, which will be provided to the NH&MP are: 611 pistols 30 bore, 460 rifles 7.62 mm G-3, A-3- 235 semi machine gun SMG 7.62 mm, 213 shot guns 12 bore, 237 tear gas guns 12 bore.
The ammunition provided to the police are: 24,436 ammunition pistol 30 bore, 68,030 ammunition SMG 7.62 mm, 24,000 ammunition MP-5, 27,588 ammunition shot gun 12 bore, 91,306 ammunition rifles 7.62, 4733 tear gas shells-10,000 ammunition rifle 5.56 mm and 578 gas masks.
A wireless system will be provided to the motorway police, which will include 17 VHF base sets, two HF base sets with complete accessories, 10 Tower 120 feet with complete accessories, 57 Walkie Talkie sets, 24 motorcycle mobile sets, five tower 150ft with complete accessories, 106 VHF mobile sets and 12 repeater sets.
Similarly, 24 jeeps 5 doors 2,000 cc to 3,000 cc and 26 cars 1,500 cc to 2,000 cc, 43 pickup double cabin/van 2,400 cc to 3,000 cc of the latest model will be provided to NH&MP, authorities said.
The other vehicles for the police are; 24 motorcycles 500 cc, two mini buses (fully loaded) 25 to 30 seaters, two trucks 3,000 cc to 4,000 cc, two tow trucks, 19 pickup single cabin and four motorcycles 100 to 125 cc of the latest model, all paid for from the national exchequer.
The parties interested in supplying arms and ammunitions to the police have been directed to bring the samples of every item for which they are bidding.
