HYDERABAD, Aug 23: Leaders of peasants’ organizations, nationalist and political parties have rejected the holding of general election under the new constitutional package and the Political Parties Order 2002, and warned that if the people of Sindh did not unite on one platform, they would become the permanent slaves of the rulers.
They were speaking on the fourth death anniversary of Mazhar Jatoi, the former president of the Sindh Hari Committee, at Kalhoro Colony here on Thursday.
Speaking as the chief guest, the chairman, Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party (STPP), Dr Qadir Magsi, who is also the president of PONAM, Sindh Chapter, said that President Pervez Musharraf was protecting the interests of only one province and had violated his own agenda.
He said the people of Sindh will have to unite on one platform otherwise they will be totally destroyed.
Mr Magsi said that the unconscionable Sindhi leaders had sold out the interests of Sindh for ministries.
He remarked that due to the legal framework order, democracy would remain just a dream.
He said during the MRD Movement, 10,000 Sindhis had been martyred while thousands of others were imprisoned and flogged.
He called upon the workers and Haris to reject greedy politicians who were siding with “the dictator”.
In his presidential address, the chief of the Sindh Hari Committee, Azhar Jatoi, assailed the opportunists who were bargaining the interests of Sindh to reach the corridors of power.
He said the generals had always harmed the integrity and solidarity of Pakistan, and added that Jinnah’s Pakistan had disintegrated.
He severely criticized the MQM(A)’s demand for the repatriation of Biharis.
The PPP leader, Jam Saqi, said that the only way to get rid of President Pervez Musharraf was to launch a consistent struggle against him in which the PPP, the PML, Haris, and women must unite on one platform.
He called upon the people to take a solemn pledge from the candidates before voting for them in the general elections that they would fight for the rights of Sindh.
RESOLUTIONS: The gathering adopted several resolutions demanding the drafting of a new constitution which should guarantee provincial autonomy for various federating units, abolition of jagirdari system, and distribution of lands among the landless Haris.
The meeting also demanded the right of Sindh over its own natural resources should be acknowledged.
The president, Sindh Hari Committee, Azhar Jatoi, announced that his party would boycott the ensuing general elections.
SURVEY: The district coordination officer, Hyderabad, has clarified that the survey of losses caused due to the breach in the Rohri Canal near Bhitshah was being conducted by the revenue authorities under the supervision of the executive district officer (revenue), Hyderabad.
The survey will evaluate both agricultural losses as well as damage to movable and immovable property.
